Need To Lower Your Cholesterol? Follow These Tips

There are two types of cholesterol – the good cholesterol, also known as HDL cholesterol, and the bad cholesterol, known as LDL cholesterol. The bad cholesterol is like a plaque that clogs up your arteries which can lead to cardiovascular disease, stroke and a heart attack. Good cholesterol, however, can actually act as the opposite by protecting your body from cardiovascular disease.

So, what can you do to lower your bad cholesterol level? Unfortunately, as people age their chances for developing high cholesterol increase. Follow these tips for healthy aging:

  1. Keep moving! When you stay physically active you help your body eliminate the buildup of bad cholesterol. This translates into 30 minutes of exercise every day, at least five times per week. When you exercise, you actually increase your HDL levels and lose weight, both of which will fight off bad cholesterol.
  2. Consume the right kind of fat. People hear “fat” and they automatically think it is bad for them. But, there are good fats that the body needs and these can be found in things like avocados, soybeans, fish, seeds, and nuts. These are monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats which have been proven to lower your “bad” cholesterol levels.
  3. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Not only are fruits and vegetables chock full of soluble fibers, they are also low in saturated fat, so you’re doing double work when it comes to reducing your LDL levels.
  4. Eat whole grains. Another stupendous source of fiber (which helps reduce LDL levels), things like wild rice and whole wheat breads instead of white (bleached) rice and refined flour products make a whole lot of sense when trying to reduce your bad cholesterol.
  5. Don’t eat saturated or trans fat products. These fats generally come from animal products (although things like butter, eggs, cheeses, and meats are okay when eaten in moderation), and products that are made by food manufacturers to extend their shelf life (like snacks, and other treats).
